It's July tomorrow, which means International zine month.
As with every year, I will try to follow it and realise I haven't done anything the day before it turns August!
I do have a few zine things I might try and complete during July....
Sugar Paper:
I think issue 17 is over halfway done and should definitely appear before July is over. It's full of sparkly things, unicorns, sweet things and bffs, and should be sponsored by food colouring!
Poor Lass:
We're still taking contributions for issue 7 of the zine I co-edit with top lass Em about being working class. This issue is about race and I have yet to write my piece for it.

Crisp zine:
After a few years of saying I am going to make a zine about crisps, I am FINALLY making a zine about crisps!
I've started some pieces I want to feature and already had a few submissions, it turns out lots of people love crisps!

Brown Girls:
Been thinking about making Brown Girl 3 for a while, but not wanting to ask for any submissions whilst asking for submissions for Poor Lass and my crisps zine. Hoping to have a new one by Autumn, so for now I might start on a few pieces I have I want to put in myself. Think I'm going to write a lot about dancing in this issue!
Sick Sad World Tour:
I get to go on tour with a bunch of my faves again this year!! And I think we're going to do a split tour zine to take with us in August!
I'm also gonna try and get through my pile of to read zines I've picked up at zine fairs this year!

Happy International Zine Month!
That's right it's July (already) and so it is International Zine Month!
Even though I know every year it happens at the same time, I always seem to think 'shit, International Zine month and I don't have time to do anything!'
I am currently working on, I think 4 zines, hopefully at least half of them will materialise, it would be great if all 4 did.
We are tabling at Leeds zine fest the first week of August, so July may just be spent getting ready for that.
In the meantime, here are my favourite zine things!
Favourite Zine:
I always bang on about this zine but I think it is because it is soo good, the zine is Colouring Outside The Lines.
Edited by the ever lovely Melanie Maddison, it is a zine that features interviews (conducted by Melanie) with female artists.
Melanie has made 6 issues (with number 6 appearing, much to my joy, after a brief hiatus) and has featured some of my favourite artists (Tara McPherson, Elizabeth McGrath, Dame Darcy, Sarah Utter and Lisa Petrucci, Christy Road, Nicole J Georges, Marion Peck and a shit load more!) and introduced me to many artists I may never heard of!
I don't think old issues are in print, but if you're ever round mine I will let you have a read!

Favourite Zinester:This one goes to my old friend Holly. We became penpals via Teletext in like 1999 when we were just 15. Holly was the first person I knew in real life who made zines, we used to make zines together, we are currently trying to make zines together again. She makes zines about the things she loves (mostly all the Bru's, Bruse Springsteen, Bruce Wayne and Irn Bru!) about queerness and class and being a fan of stuff, all the best things in life really!

Favourite Zine fair:I think this goes to Sheffield zine fest. The one I have tabled at the most. I have done other cities, London, Leeds and my own fair city, Manchester. But I really like the Sheff one, it could have something to do with the fact I see all my favourite Yorkshire faces there and the venue has a giant slide in it!
Favourite type of Zine:I make a craft zine, I love a good skill sharing or recipe zine, I also edit Poor Lass which is the stories of working class folk, told by working class folk, so I guess that could be called perzine (personal zine), I guess my zine Brown Girl has a perzine touch to it, but my one true love, the first zines I ever got sent in the post as a teenager were Fanzines, zines about the stuff people love.
These are my favourite zines, I feel they don't get made as much anymore, but maybe now I don't have ten penpals and friendship books and zines covered in glitter dropping through my door anymore all the time, I am just out of the loop!
Favourite Zine place:Whenever I go on holiday I seek out the zine shops and zine libraries, but my favourite place is at home.
It's Salford zine library (that is no longer in Salford but in Manchester City Centre).
It's housed in Nexus Art Café off Oldham st, next door to my favourite comic shop, Travelling Man.
I reckon the fact it's just a 10-15mins bus ride from my house makes it my favourite place to peruse zines, but it also has a great collection!

Favourite way to make a Zine:
I am a cut 'n' paste kinda gal! For many reasons; my favourite zines growing up were made this way, it's how I learnt to make zines, it's the only way I know and it's accessible for lot's of people to make zines this way.
I have gotten a little modern from when I first made zines, I used to hand write or type on my typewriter, but I then eventually got a computer so typed all my writing out and sourced backgrounds and drew pictures and cut and pasted it all together. I don't understand computer programmes or have photoshop, I do have scissors and a glue stick and a long armed stapler so this is what I use!
I like to show people how to make a zine with one piece of paper, a pen, a pair of scissors and access to a photocopier.
Favourite Zine I have made:I have made a lot of zine about a lot of things (being brown, My-So Called Life, EMO music, teenage crushes, Gerard Way's jackets to name a few) and Sugar Paper is the longest running zine I have made (14 issues, I reckon in like 7 years!) and had the pleasure of making with one of my best friends, But I think I am most proud of Poor Lass Zine.

Brown Girl(s) 2/ POC I need you!
Yesterday was the 26th day of International Zine month, and that days task was to contribute to a compilation zine. I didn't do that, unless you count my own!
Earlier this year (I think!) I completed a zine about me and my experiences with being brown! I cleverly called it Brown Girl...

As soon as I got back from the printers I remembered how I wanted to write about my favourite Caribbean foods, I kicked myself for forgetting.
I have since sold out of the zine (and hoping to get my arse in gear to get some more printed soon) but I got lots of awesome feedback and made me think in order for me to write about my favourite food I should just do another. But not one filled with just my voice. A lot of the feedback I got was how other WOC would like to tell their story.
So.... in short POC I NEED YOU! I want your contributions for Brown Girl 2! You can write about anything, your stories, whether it's about finding your place, your hair or food! You don't have to write, you can draw, collage, photograph ANYTHING I just need your contributions!

The zines I have made...
It's July which means it's International zine month. Every year I tell myself I'm going to participate in it somehow, but every year I remember how much of a procrastinator I am and nothing gets done.
This year is no different, I need to get my arse in gear as my to do list is forever full.
Anyway in the spirit of thinking about zines I ventured into my bottom/zine drawer that's jam packed full of letters, notepads scraps of paper and all the zines I have made pre Sugar Paper.
Any zines I made after and including Sugar Paper are accessible and not tucked away in a drawer as these are my 'more serious grown up zines' that I actually do reprint.
The ones in the drawer however, the half done ones, the never to reach the printing stage ones, THE TEENAGE ONES will forever remain in that drawer!
I flicked through some of the zines and I cringed, I mean nobody, NOBODY wants to read all their feelings from when they were 15! The zines are full of all different things, gig reviews, pop culture nonsense, and the 'totally just got into riot grrrl in the last few years' of talking sex, liberation and empowerment. Also full of all that teen angst, self loathing and mostly boredom.
Now why, if I find them so cringeworthy and am never going to print them and hope all copies are now non existent and no one will ever see them again, why do I keep the masters?
I don't know maybe to remind myself that not all the things I felt as a teen will be felt now, growing older is good, you change, you grow, it's weird. But I think it's to remind myself of all the zines I have made and how much I like doing zines and if I ever think what I want to write about is stupid or I think I'm too old to be making zines, I look back and go I've been doing this since I was 15 and I bloody enjoy it!
SO in short happy international zine month, enjoy zines, making or reading, either way enjoy them.
Here's to another 15 years of zine making!

So I was speaking to Kandy about doing something on the blog for International zine month and she said you should do 1o things I love about zines, but use the 10 things I hate about you logo or a still and adjust it on paint (anything for a cheap laugh us!) So I did that and went one further, I adjusted Kat's poem too!

CELEBRITY ZINE REVIEW!!!!!!
So at the start of the month I mentioned celebrity zine reviews, then last week I pointed out that meant myself reviewing zines written by celebrities. Some of you may have been disappointed there weren't any actual celebrities involved BUT I thought what better way to end our special International Zine Month posts by getting an actual celebrity!
May I present.....
TV's JOYCE D'VISION reviewing The Unskinny Bop zine!
it's like Bella for chubs jam packed with helpful hints and tips for fatties! It covers everything Life! Fashion! Culture! Comment! Inspirational Messages! A zine dedicated to chub power is my kinda zine, body positive messages delivered in a non patronising, empowering fun and frisky tone!
I've actually only got one issue of Unskinny bop that i read over and over! It's the only one you can download so if yr listening ladies get more online!
As I'm sure your aware Unskinny Bop is a pretty hot night down in London catering for ladies and gentlemen of size who want to dance and lay down a phat badonkadonk without the mean gaze of our skinny oppressors! My kinda night!
There's a keen focus on podgers in pop in this zine, Beth Ditto, The Big Bopper and Missy Elliot get a shout out, perhaps one day ol 'Joyce could make the cut!?
I have to say one of my favourite sections is the Fat Girl AIlments section, this issue focuses on "The Chafe" a blight to all active chubs have the face, Unskinny Bop showed me there is a light at the end of the caffed tunnel!
Although my fave article is "20 Things I can Lift With My Tits" which I myself gave a go and boy did I, I got 3 DVD's and an Ellen Video under my moobs!

Celebrity zines!!!
So, I realised when I stated that for international zine month the blog would feature celebrity zine reviews, it made it sound like we would have celebrity's reviewing zines, well I apologise, because it isn't that, but you never know!
What I did mean was that I would go through my zine collection and review ones I have made by celebrities (by celebrities I obviously mean people in bands I like and such!).
So here we go....
Shitty Reality #1 by Cassie Ramone (of the Vivian Girls)
A cute A6 zine filled with photos and illustrations by Cassie, that she made whilst on tour. I think it came in a series of 3 zines that covered the tour.
Be Honourable by Josie Long (comedian!)
Another A6 zine that coincided with a tour of the same name. I didn't go to any of the tour but I did End up with this zine. Full of musings, jokes, stories and more!
My Life With Evan Dando by Kathleen Hanna
An A6 zine that does exactly what it says on the tin! If you have ever heard Kathleen Hanna's cover of I wish I was Him, well this is the zine to go along with that. A zine full of writing about Kathleen's Love/hate relationship with Evan Dando and the whole 'rockstar' image/lifestyle fandom area of things!
Hideous Tales Of Decadance And Debauchery by Dame Darcy (artist)
This A5 zine comes with a bright pink cover and is made with Dame Darcy's friend Miss Satanica. They both come from Idaho so part of the zine is about their time growing up. It also has other tales and lots of Dame Darcy's illustrations in it.
Popgirls #2 by Manda Rin (of the band Bis)

I don't seem to have any other issues of this zine. It's A5 and comes in a lovely blue cover. It has tonnes of music stuff in it from reviews to lots on interviews with awesome ladies in ace bands and a crossword too!
Guitar Basics by Sarah Utter (artist and from the band Bangs)
This short but sweet A5 zine is really cool. It's a really easy to follow guide on how to play the guitar. Power chords, tricks and buying equipment. OK so i still never learnt to play, but now I've dug it back out, I might give it another go!
Fag School #1 by Brontez ( Junx from Gravy Train!!!!)
An A4 B&W affair. that features everything from porn reviews, stories, interviews, colouring in and an agony aunt column with one of my all time favourites Allsion Wolfe! But as it states on the back, it's not intended for minors!!

The easy guide to zine making...
I wrote this a couple of years ago to feature on a website for pre- teen girls...
So you love magazines, you want to make your own. You don’t know how, you suck at doing anything technical on a computer. It’s ok you can still make your own fabulous zine, we’ll show you how!
All you need is some ideas, a pen, some paper, scissors and a glue stick!
How to make a ‘cut ‘n’ paste style’ A5 zine…..
-Cut ‘n’ paste style means just that, it involves cutting and pasting! They usually look a bit messy, lot’s of words and collage style pictures.
-Start by getting together what you want in your zine; rants, reviews, drawings, stories, anything really. If it makes it easier, give yourself a theme, like a music zine or a fashion zine.
-Once you’ve got all the stuff you want in your zine you can start laying it out. You need to work in A5 format (that’s A4 folded in half!). So if you’re writing/typing stuff out make sure it’s not too wide to fit on an A5 piece of paper (15cm).
-Collect pictures, doodles and stuff for background. Words are nice but they’re better with a few pics here and there! Use old magazines and wrapping paper because then you’ll be recycling too!
-when gluing down your words and pictures, glue them on individual pieces of A5. This will make it easier when compiling your zine.
-Now time for some maths (UGH, we hear you cry, thought zine making was fun!). It’s OK, it’s not much. Just remember that you need to make sure that however many pages of A5 you have to go in your zine, make sure it’s a multiple of FOUR (that means you see it on the 4 times table somewhere!) Otherwise you’ll be left with blank pages.
-Here’s the tricky part (more maths we’re afraid!). Count how many pages you have. Divide that number by four, this tells you how many pieces of A4 paper you will need, IE: for 20 A5 sheets get 5 pieces of A4. Fold them in half together like a book. Jot down on each side of paper which zine articles will go where, start with the cover obviously! This way when you photocopy it, any article that goes over one A5 page will follow on nicely.
-When you’ve figured that out, glue them all down! When you separate the A4 pages you should have zinegae stuck on both sides. If it DOESN’T follow on (on each sheet) then you’ve done it correctly!
-Now all you have to do is get it double side photocopied. Give it to the ‘rentals to get it done in the office for free, or your teacher at school/college! So you love magazines, you want to make your own. You don’t know how, you suck at doing anything technical on a computer. It’s ok you can still make your own fabulous zine, we’ll show you how!
All you need is some ideas, a pen, some paper, scissors and a glue stick!
How to make a ‘cut ‘n’ paste style’ A5 zine…..
-Cut ‘n’ paste style means just that, it involves cutting and pasting! They usually look a bit messy, lot’s of words and collage style pictures.
-Start by getting together what you want in your zine; rants, reviews, drawings, stories, anything really. If it makes it easier, give yourself a theme, like a music zine or a fashion zine.
-Once you’ve got all the stuff you want in your zine you can start laying it out. You need to work in A5 format (that’s A4 folded in half!). So if you’re writing/typing stuff out make sure it’s not too wide to fit on an A5 piece of paper (15cm).
-Collect pictures, doodles and stuff for background. Words are nice but they’re better with a few pics here and there! Use old magazines and wrapping paper because then you’ll be recycling too!
-when gluing down your words and pictures, glue them on individual pieces of A5. This will make it easier when compiling your zine.
-Now time for some maths (UGH, we hear you cry, thought zine making was fun!). It’s OK, it’s not much. Just remember that you need to make sure that however many pages of A5 you have to go in your zine, make sure it’s a multiple of FOUR (that means you see it on the 4 times table somewhere!) Otherwise you’ll be left with blank pages.
-Here’s the tricky part (more maths we’re afraid!). Count how many pages you have. Divide that number by four, this tells you how many pieces of A4 paper you will need, IE: for 20 A5 sheets get 5 pieces of A4. Fold them in half together like a book. Jot down on each side of paper which zine articles will go where, start with the cover obviously! This way when you photocopy it, any article that goes over one A5 page will follow on nicely.
-When you’ve figured that out, glue them all down! When you separate the A4 pages you should have zinegae stuck on both sides. If it DOESN’T follow on (on each sheet) then you’ve done it correctly!
-Now all you have to do is get it double side photocopied. Give it to the ‘rentals to get it done in the office for free, or your teacher at school/college! Theme Park Zine

Look what dropped on my doormat this morning, a zine about theme parks!!
But not just your average theme parks, your weird and wonderful ones. A lovely lady named Kate has taken her love for these theme parks and turned it into a zine, featuring some of the amazing places she's visited and contributions from other people.
You'll find my enthusiastic review of The Enchanted Forest in the zine as well as write ups for Moomin World, Bedrock, Luna Park and more!

Seleena's favourite zine!
So I have a lot of favourite zines and I go back to a lot of zines and like most 'favourite' things it depends on your mood as to how much you like them.
But one I always go back to and always in the mood for is the (sadly now defunct) Colouring Outside The Lines Zine.
I suppose it helps that it's a zine about tow of my favourite things, women and art!!!
It's a zine that features interviews with female contemporary artists, some of my old favourites and some that I discovered in this zine.
To name a few, it features: Dame Darcy, Lisa Petrucci, Tara McPherson, Nikki McClure, Marion Peck, Sarah Utter, Nicole J gorges and SO MANY MORE!!!
There is an added bonus too, it is compiled and edited by the ever lovely lady Melanie Maddison, who has compiled more recently another awesome zine called Shape & Situate.
Rumour has it COTLZ might make a come back FINGERS CROSSED!
In the meantime you can read the interviews HERE!

Salford Zine Library
Yesterday Kandy and I popped down to the new home of Salford Zine Library. We sipped on rose lemonade and perused all the zines on offer. The space is really ace, clean bright and welcoming with loads of zines stuffed in!
You can find it in Nexus in Manchester (which is on Dale Street). It's in the back just past the counter. Now I just need to submit Sugar paper for the library (been saying that for ever now!)
